We had a special visitor last night, Marilyn Mitchell from NYC. She has been a tremendous support for our Wisconsin Chapter of Achilles. It was neat to meet her in person. She is on the right, wearing dark clothing. We had a great turnout last night - furries and nonfurries!







Some of the Achilles members followed the evening walk, with dinner with Marilyn.

1) April 15th , Sunday - Parkinson Walk at East Towne Mall

This is not a "race" but more of a low key event.

Registration begins at 11:00 am with the walk starting at 12:00pm (noon)

Start time: 6:30pm

Where: Vilas Park, Madison

Distances: 5K/10K run, 10K wheelchair (attention Pete) and 2 mile walk

Registration fee: $20

*Let me know who is interested in doing this one - perhaps it will be a sanctioned Achilles event (that means if enough folks are interested ATC-Madison will pay for registration fees).

3) June 24th - Sunday - New York City Hope & Possibility 5 Mile Run/Walk/Handcycle

Start time: 10am

Location: Central Park

Stipends will be available to cover at least airfare.

Registration fees will be Free

Plans are to fly out from Milwaukee on Friday June 22nd to LaGuardia and fly back Monday June 25th.

Triumph the husky

Triumph’s long journey begins on the side of a road in Adana, Turkey, where she was found bleeding: both of her hind legs had been cut off. An international team of individuals devoted their time and resources to see Triumph thrive, and she was ultimately adopted and resettled in a loving home in Nashville, TN. Through a second series of miraculous events, Triumph was brought to Dr. Taylor for evaluation to receive the first-ever permanent prosthetic legs for a dog.

Dr. Taylor collaborated with BioMedtrix, a long-time manufacturer of titanium implants for hip replacement surgeries. A special percutaneous implant was designed for osseointegration surgery—in other words, permanent prostheses that would enable Triumph to run and play and continue her work as a Delta-certified therapy dog. The metal implant, with its rubber “foot” is literally tapped into the hollow of the bone. The surrounding bone and soft tissue grow into the textured surface of the implant, making it a permanent part of her anatomy. Triumph’s surgery has been declared an unqualified success, and she will continue to be carefully monitored for the rest of her life.

Triumph’s progress will be watched in all areas of medicine. The hope is that this surgery can be routinely performed in dogs and cats. Triumph hopes to see the application of this procedure in human beings in her lifetime. Perhaps this is her thank you to those who gave her a second chance.

"I was in Madison last week for meetings of the Independent Living Council of Wisconsin.

Fellow board members, 250 other educators, leaders, program developers, and activists are meeting together and with legislators to discuss:

• and other supports.

We are also providing leadership training and grassroots training for various groups. Energizing, essential and empowering for all involved. These issues touch all of our lives."

Pete and the Miami Marathon

Hey everybody,

I finished the miami marathon this morning in about 2 hours and ten
minutes. It was pouring rain for half an hour before the start for
about the first 20 minutes of the race.

It was insane, absolutly the craziest marathon I have done yet. After the rain cleared out everything was fine.

Other than that the ocean is beatiful and the temperature has been in the
70's. I can't wait to get back to wisconsin and freeze.

Survey for the Spinal Cord-Injured

Laura Cox, a student at West Virginia University, is conducting research to determine the relationship between exercise training, competitive athletic participation, and quality-of-life outcomes for wheelchair-bound people with spinal cord injury. Ms. Cox is conducting a survey that takes approximately 10-15 minutes to complete.

An Achilles Member to Inspire!

Though my legs were partially frozen/paralyzed I had the loving, affirming outstretched arms of my friends to help do the Polar Bear Plunge. That's what we all do when we are living with wellness and wholeness - help others live theirs lives with zest and meaning, and allow others to help us. Diverse abilities - infinite possibilities!

Another Marathon for Pete, #5

Our handcycle marathon racer Pete Greenwood will be competing in another full marathon on Jan 28th in Miami, Florida.

Pete will be joined by a large group of Achilles member from New York and Florida.

We all wish Pete well and a fast time in the warm Miami area this January.

Achilles Holiday Party - 12/21/06

• Party will follow right after the workout/walk

• Achilles will be providing food and yummies but feel free to bring a dish to pass (college students please just bring yourself - don't worry about bringing a dish, or buying food - we will enjoy your company greatly)

4) turn left onto Old Sauk Road, go under the beltline and head west for approx. 1 mile
5) At the top of the hill turn right onto Pleasant View Road
6) Go approx 1/4 mile north, at bottom of the hill turn Left into Boulder Creek Apartments driveway
7) The building on your immediate right is the Clubhouse with the party
8) Turn to your right and park in front of the building (call Kim if lost 444-9424)
